We are looking at purchasing a second GPS purely for geaocaching, principally as a backup unit, and was wondering if the Garmin GPSmap 60CSx supports paperless caching?

In a word... No.
But on the other hand... Yes.
Not paperless in the way the likes of the Oregons are, but with GSAK and a GSAK macro some paperless caching is possible.

There is a way by using a macro in GSAK, I have never actually tried it.
As far as I know they are loaded as waypoints with very basic data loaded.
If you shop around you might be able to find a Oregon 300 at a cheap price, I managed to pick one up for £130 on EBay

Read to the end, there's a new macro...
I used the old version linked, not used the new version.
Way of working was:
Load the files grom GSAK as GPX files.
Re-load as POI files
Cache 'as per usual' with GPX files. If you need cache page info hit 'nearest POI' and 'Bob's yer Uncle!'

Thanks for the info guys. We are using an Oregon 450 as our main unit, but I'd read that the 60CSX has good battery life and is a very well regarded unit. Thought it would make a good backup unit if I can get one for a reasonable price second hand.

I have a 60Cx as my second unit and take it along if we are going to be in heavy tree cover as it is by far the best in those conditions.

I use my 60CSx as the main unit and the Oregon 300 as the second unit...
Use the Oregon to log finds/read the cache page/show the OS map instead of using a PDA.
(Has better battery life than the PDA!)
