:D
Looks like I got things back to front for a change - posted in another thread before saying hello !
I'm Bob, married to Jackie for 33 years and we've got 18 year old triplets that are about to go to university. Hobbies are caravanning and red wine
I've carefully avoided Geocaching for quite a while cos it seemed to have too much in common with orientering - hopefully I was wrong ...
Picked up on this site as a couple of the key bods on here use a caravanning forum that I belong to
No GPS yet for two reasons:
1. I'm skint
2. I haven't got a clue what to get
I'm trying to get up to speed pretty quickly but there's a HUGE amount that I don't know. As far as I can see my options are:
1. Cheap and cheerful with limited functionality
2. All singing all dancing and sell a kidney
I'm inclined towards a fuller spec as I'd like to use it in the second car but I need more knowledge (Not to mention a bag of gold)
:dunno:

Welcome Bob, I met you on T&T as DaveE. Several caravaners on here and plenty who will offer GPS advice :)
I suggest you start with our Help and Advice> Technical help forum, where you'll find information on GPS units.
You can go caching with a £60 Garmin Etrex but if you want maps and even road navigation then GPS get more expensive up to several hundred. As with all things, best to decide what you'd like to use it for and then consider the options with that functionality.
There are a few places offering GPS loan where you can try out geocaching, Shropshire Discovery Centre and Yorkshire Dales National Park leap to mind.
Let us have your questions and we'll try to help.

Hya Bob, I have belonged to most of the Caravaning forums over the last few years and have mentioned Caching on one or two.
I initially had an Etrex type GPS but now that I have the Oregon I wonder why I didnt change earlier. The Dakota is a good cheap option that offers paperless caching.

Welcome! :)
Car sat-navs are not good for Geocaching, and a handheld GPS is not the easiest to use for navigation to drive by...

A happy teddy bear here - still no GPS BUT I found my first cache 10 minutes ago !
Nice and easy for my first one and best of all it's less than a 5 minute walk from my desk ! No GPS yet but Google Maps was good enough given that I knew what was in the area

Ah, that confirms it - deffo the Predictable Bob who fixed my caravan gas fire - only I remember now it was 2003 not 2004. :socool:
Welcome to the wonderful world of geocaching, and to the GAGB website. Congrats on your first find.
What GPS to get? Different things suit different people. A lot do it with their fancy phones nowadays, but they aren't very robust and battery life can be a problem out in the field.
I use my Garmin Nuvi Sat Nav for getting to the parking area and for holding all the info for paperless caching - transfers from campervan to car to car as I need it for work too. Once on the trail I use a Garmin Etrex Legend HCX with Garmin GB Topo maps on, but before that I found my first 400+ caches with the Nuvi..
If I could afford it I'd probably go for the Oregon.

I fixed your gas fire and you're still alive - that's got to be a first ! :applause:
I wonder how many more there are from T&T on here - I've counted 3 so far but I suspect there's a fair few more
Good to hear from you - hope all is well

Well done. So would you like the full adiction or was that it? :D

No problem Dave - I'm borderline obsessive at the best of times so I reckon the full addiction will hit me soon enough ! I noticed that there's a couple on the A303 that shouldn't be too hard to find ...
