View Full Version : Differences for the 60 CSX & 76 CSX

I may be in the position to purchase one of these flash toys later in the year. I would be using it for both Archaeology and hiking as well as Geocaching. Quite an improvement from my Garmin Legend! It might end up travelling with me to the Russian Steppes for some work, so naturally I need the one of the best quality.

Anyway, can some of you Techno dudes please tell me what the differences are, and which one would be better for Topo maps and such details, and would work best in cover and poor signal areas? So far I know one floats and one doesn't, and the 60CSX has an external aerial where the 76CSX has an internal.

All help appreciated.

is anyone rich enough to have played with one of these toys??? just as long as you let us have a play with it!

I know a few cachers who own the 60 CSX, but no-one who owns the 76 CSX!
They are the fraction of the price here if you buy in Canada. They cost far too much in the UK as it is.

don't forget the import tax unless you know someone who can post it as a "gift" to you of very low value... or bring it over...

ok this sounds daft but have you thought to contact garmin and explain you can't decide what you want it to do.....

Purchase, shipping to Uk from Canada including import tax roughly totals: £220-£235. :)

This is still almost half price from the UK sales. Having looked around at prices I cannot see why we charge nearly double over here for a GPS Unit compared to America and Canada. Sheesh, our taxes really are the higest in Europe  There is no difference with the units because they all come loaded with the US basemap anyway.

It seems there are only two differences: The 76CSX is the only floating unit if dropped in water and it also comes with a larger memory chip. And that is it really!

I have a 60CSX and love most of it, apart from the electronic compass which is a waste of power and money. Go for the Cx model and save money!

I haven't tried a 76 so can only make limited comments:
the 76 floats (although the 60 claims to be waterproof and is certainly rainproof),
the controls for the 76 are at the top not the bottom (personal preference?),
the 60's external antenna will probably work better in poor signal conditions (otherwise why bother make it external),
Garmin seem to update the 60 software before the 76 for similar upgrades (maybe the 60 sells more)?

Oh BTW, the memory is easy to upgrade, I bought a 2Gb microSD (= transflash) which takes the whole Topo GB (which is 1.6Gb). Topo is also excellent apart from missing footpaths.

I have a 60CSX too and think it's great. I can't believe how sensitive it is - it will usually pick up enough satellites to get a location fix while indoors! I can't comment on the other model, but know you will love this one!

Ah but your missing the point, Nobby. It will tell you WHO's house you are in. Imagine how embarrassing it would be to find yourself in your neighbour's house and you didn't even know

So after all this discussion, has it helped you make up your mind on which is the best GPS for you, or have you been put off the whole thing now?
